On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Science Shows Us How to Perform Under Pressure
On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Science Shows Us How to Perform Under Pressure There is no shortage of inspiring messages about how you must learn to rise above the occasion and show your brilliance under pressure if you want to be successful. When we think of people who epitomize such messages, those who come to mind are often sports superstars like Michael Jordan. How many times did he pull out a game-winner at the buzzer? But whether the rest of us mere mortals can do the same when were under pressure is the subject of a new book, Performing Under Pressure: The Science of Doing Your Best When it Matters Most, by Hendrie Weisinger and J.P. Pawliw-Fry. The biggest fallacy about performingunder pressureis that you have to try harder, Weisinger says. But Tom Brady doesnt have to rise to the occasion. In other words, its just another day at the office for the New England Patriots quarterback when he plays in the Super Bowl. Theres no pressure for him because hes just doing what he normally does after decades of practice. Theres no need for him to be nervous because he knows he is capable of performing in that situation, Weisinger says. To translate that into the everyday workers life, someone moving into a new job shouldnt think, Oh, now Ive got the job, so now I need to perform, Weisinger says. Youve already proved yourself. Just continue to do what youre doing. Weisinger points out that research reveals that no oneperforms better under pressure and pressure undermines performance even in elite athletes and executives. The key, he says, is that we can learn to perform up to the level of our ability(read the rest here)

Interview with Christine Jahnke, author of The Well-Spoken Woman
Interview with Christine Jahnke, author of The Well-Spoken Woman A few weeks ago, members of the Get Ahead Club had the opportunity to listen to my interview with Christine Jahnke. Christine Jahnke the author of The Well-Spoken Woman: How to Look and Sound Your Best. Her new book The Well-Spoken Woman draws upon her 20 years of experience helping people from all walks of life stand and deliver before audiences large and small. A Washington, DC-based speech coach Chris prepped First Lady Michelle Obama for her International Olympic Committee speech and Al Franken for his U.S. Senate debates. Read Christine Jahnkes book if you want to learn how to: Present your authentic self like PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi Project podium presence like Hillary Clinton Connect with audiences like Michelle Obama Overcome the imposter syndrome like Tina Fey Articulate a compelling message like Melinda Gates Conquer the camera with savvy sound bites like Suze Orman A few things we discussed during the interview: Women need to be better at giving atta-girls to one another. Remember to positively encourage other women around you. A fatal presentation mistake is laying out what you want to say on the PowerPoint presentation. Write down what you want to say first on a separate sheet of paper and then create the powerpoint. The way you get over your presentation fears is to give more presentations. Great speakers have to work really hard at it too and that is why they hire speech coaches like Christine. Volunteer and be proactive at finding more speaking opportunities so you can improve. Take yourself seriously. If you have been asked to an important meeting or event, you belong there. Its not a test. You are equal to everyone else in the room so dont doubt yourself. If you are going to be speaking at an event, take your outfit for a test drive before the event. Remember, its always better to be overdressed than underdressed.
